6 Page Research Paper...My Favorite!

My first thought when I saw the “RLit Research Paper” title was another essay? Then I saw how many pages it had to be and starting thinking that eventually I would have to do this paper no matter how long I put it off. It is bittersweet knowing this is the last paper but has to be six full pages.
I honestly dread writing research papers. Once we were assigned one and I looked at the topics they had to be on and my anxiety kicked in. I knew that it was coming sooner or later though. Every time I think of my paper and how far I am on it, I just think of the word stress. So far my research paper has not been started. I am starting it today though by finding sources and creating a sort of outline I plan to follow. I am still in the process of reading the other book. I chose to do the writing prompt that included the Lolita book. It is interesting so far. I have no idea when I plan on starting to actually write my paper. I am aiming to do it the day before Thanksgiving. I might start it on Thanksgiving so I do not pick at the food that is being made so I am actually hungry for the dinner. (Ha-ha). Other than that my essay is coming along just fine so far.
I tend to procrastinate when I do my work (that doesn’t just apply for this class). It pressures me into finishing because it has to be due soon, so, I get it done under pressure. I think that runs in the family though because my sister is exactly the same way. We will both be sitting at the table doing homework at eleven at night. It does not help that we sit there and talk to each other or goof around. I think my plan on starting my paper the day before or the day of Thanksgiving is a good one. My sister will be gone for Las Vegas and she won’t be there to distract me.
The difficulty I am having is finding other sources that will be relevant to my paper. I am not sure if my sources will incorporate smoothly with my paper. That is one of my biggest obstacles I think I will face once it comes the time. If anybody has any helpful ways they use to organize their paper or an outline they follow that they find helpful. Do not hesitate to share with me : ) I always am in need of improving my essay writing skills.

  1. Hi Ashlin! Thanks for sharing your dilemma and feeling towards our last yet (yes!) six-paged essay. I do share your feelings; especially we are at the last leg of this race (quoting from the television show The Race, CBS 2). We are indeed nearing the end of this wonderful literary journey, and with endings I believe our professor won't let us go without making that huge bang or impact in our literary learning. Hence, our six-paged essay. I have learned many things from this class more than I have in traditional class and even the previous English classes that I have taken before. This class is definitely outstanding compare to any other English class I’ve had. I'm also doing my last essay on Lolita. I found it interesting since the name Lolita is featured in RLIT, I figured if it was used and inspired to name a book then it must be very good. It may sound superficial in how I came to decide what book to write about. Yet as I read RLIT I became more intrigued about the book Lolita. So when I read our assignment about the last essay, there was almost no doubt in my mind that's what I wanted to write about. However, when I went to AVC library to borrow the book, it was already checked out and the due date for the borrower will be on November 29. Maybe you beat me to the punch? Hehehe! It was just my luck that Barnes and Nobles still carry them with only one copy left (the rest of the two copies are in Spanish!). I'm so glad and relieved I got the last copy of it. Anyway, to assist you with other sources, you might want to visit the library, and go to the circulation desk on the 1st floor and ask how you can access ebscohost journals from your home computer. That database contains many journals and reviews on the book or any book for that matter. The information is in a pink paper on the desk of the library clerk/tech. I hope that helps! Good luck on your paper! I think we all need it! :)

  2. I too shared your feelings upon seeing the assignment for another research paper. I also thought about how many pages it had to be and knew it had to be done eventually! I too dread research papers, like I said in my blog "When I think research paper, my heart sinks. I get that feeling I felt in high school that when I would stress about the upcoming workload. It’s constantly on my mind and it’s what I think about daily. So when I opened the link and first saw the words “Research Paper”, on cue, my heart sank." But once I got into the readings I think I was able to set some of the fears aside. RLiT is really interesting, and Lolita is a great read. I found myself looking forward to the research paper, not thrilled that I had to do it, but looking forward I think to getting it done and out of the way. I tend to procrastinate way too much and I find myself in the same predicament this time around. But I know it'll get done and I look forward to the day it's done as I'm sure you are too. Good Luck!!

  3. I completely know how you feel about this paper being bittersweet, that’s an awesome way to describe it. You’re so close to the end but there is quite a hump we must get over to reach the sweet release of Christmas break! When you wrote this blog you hadn’t started your paper yet, I don’t think I had even thought about it yet. Much like I do with my messy room and dirty car, if I ignore it, it might go away. But of course you and I both know that that never happens. I hope Lolita was a good book, when it was discussed in Reading Lolita in Tehran it sounded like quite a story. Finally, you and your sister are two peas in a pod and I think that is so cute!  good luck! Hopefully we will come out of this knowing what we accomplished!
