When we thought the end was never in sight and now it is here! This is our last blog. It feels very nice :) it is somewhat relieving. It’s a signal that school is almost over but finals are very near. This class has helped me out a lot more than I had expected. I am really glad I found out about the smartthinking website to submit papers for editing. It’s a very helpful tool that I recommend to anyone who did not try it. Since I have another two years in college before I get my Bachelors Degree, I figure this website will come pretty handy to future classes.
This class has helped my writing skills greatly. It shows when I feel confident about a paper and get a good grade on it. I have been very successful in this class. All the extra work we had to do like the blogging, discussion posts, group activities, other side activities, EL questions, and other assignments (although sometimes they seemed pointless)have helped my writing skill s and my critically thinking skills. It was cool to hear other people’s opinions and to collaborate on assignments. It really takes away a lot of the agony when being assigned a project. Having partners in a project really relieves the stress. Thanks for whoever I was put in a group with to help complete an assignment. It was relieving to know I could rely on my classmates to help complete a project.
It was great to share ideas and opinions about topics and assignments with my classmates. It helped me become more open minded to other opinions and understand the reasons behind them. I have become more tolerant of others ideas and opinions that conflict with mine.
Well, since school is almost done for this semester that means finals are fast approaching. Since I have five classes that means, five finals. Lucky me right. I just wanted to wish every good luck on their finals and hopefully we all end this class with a good grade: ) Well good luck and have a happy holidays.
Thanks Jennifer for a productive semester and contributing to my education. Your teaching is greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays!!

Response to my first blog
I think critically thinking is much much more than what I wrote in my first blog. Thinking critically is being able to see beneath the surface of what you are analyzing. It is being able to understand, using your current knowledge and applying it, to what is being analyzed. Analyzing things is a crucial part in being able to critically think about something.
In my first blog “I wrote that my habits are reflected when it comes to reading and thinking critically about something. When it comes to my life, I feel when I think critically about things it is easier than when I read books or other sorts of writings. When analyzing books or other writings I usually end up doubting myself saying “That’s probably wrong”. I am never confident in whether or not I truly get the concept or the underlying ideas of a book or any kind of writing. Hopefully this class will help me think critically and better analyze concepts of writings and writing itself.” My opinion has changed in some ways. When I critically think about my work in school it helps me better understand the concepts. I can critically think more effectively due to the classes I have taken this semester, giving most of the credit to this class and my art class. Also, now when I read books and writings I can analyze them with confidence and trust my critical thinking skills to better understand them. This class has helped me a lot in sharpening up my critical thinking skills.
In my first blog, I wrote that analyzing things includes observing things. My thoughts on this have changed. When I analyze things, mostly my school work, I think of how I can approach it. I think of all the necessary outcomes and all of its details and keep that in mind while trying to approach it. Analyzing something does not just involve looking at it but applying knowledge to it, exploring it much more than just its surface.
I previously wrote that I analyze the media and how they display the view of what people should look like. I think this is still true in that the media represents women as being thin. This is true, yet, it doesn’t take much to figure that out. All in all, we all analyze and critically think every day. Thanks to this class I can do that more efficiently.

6 Page Research Paper...My Favorite!
My first thought when I saw the “RLit Research Paper” title was another essay? Then I saw how many pages it had to be and starting thinking that eventually I would have to do this paper no matter how long I put it off. It is bittersweet knowing this is the last paper but has to be six full pages.
I honestly dread writing research papers. Once we were assigned one and I looked at the topics they had to be on and my anxiety kicked in. I knew that it was coming sooner or later though. Every time I think of my paper and how far I am on it, I just think of the word stress. So far my research paper has not been started. I am starting it today though by finding sources and creating a sort of outline I plan to follow. I am still in the process of reading the other book. I chose to do the writing prompt that included the Lolita book. It is interesting so far. I have no idea when I plan on starting to actually write my paper. I am aiming to do it the day before Thanksgiving. I might start it on Thanksgiving so I do not pick at the food that is being made so I am actually hungry for the dinner. (Ha-ha). Other than that my essay is coming along just fine so far.
I tend to procrastinate when I do my work (that doesn’t just apply for this class). It pressures me into finishing because it has to be due soon, so, I get it done under pressure. I think that runs in the family though because my sister is exactly the same way. We will both be sitting at the table doing homework at eleven at night. It does not help that we sit there and talk to each other or goof around. I think my plan on starting my paper the day before or the day of Thanksgiving is a good one. My sister will be gone for Las Vegas and she won’t be there to distract me.
The difficulty I am having is finding other sources that will be relevant to my paper. I am not sure if my sources will incorporate smoothly with my paper. That is one of my biggest obstacles I think I will face once it comes the time. If anybody has any helpful ways they use to organize their paper or an outline they follow that they find helpful. Do not hesitate to share with me : ) I always am in need of improving my essay writing skills.

Communication Styles
I am not much of a communicator through the internet. I don’t have a MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, etc. The only I thing I do have is this blogging account which I would have never signed up for if it wasn’t for this class. I communicate a lot through text message though which is like my writing style if I were to use online communication sites. My writing style is sort of unique because I use acronyms for certain words or I abbreviate some, but that is for text messaging only. When I compose emails to teachers about school, my writing is professional and has correct etiquette I guess you would say.
When it comes to communicating with family and friends I do not use proper language all the time. But who usually does these days? I know one of the big issues people are talking about is how they are worried about younger generations and the way they talk. With advanced technology, these generations text or IM with slang or acronyms. This transfers over to everyday living with students using this incorrect language in class. I think that not being able to talk in perfect grammar all the time is only human. We adapt to what things are “cool” or what is easiest at the time. It is interesting to see how things slowly change and evolve in society.
When it comes to my communication style, I tell stories or information that is straight to the point. My sister on the other hand, when she tells a story she doesn’t leave out any details. She will tell you a ten minutes story that really could have been about two. She will tell you every minor detail and every single word said. She is a good story teller but when she has a story to tell you be prepared to be there a while. If I am doing something and she has to tell me a story I usually tell her wait until I am done and then she can talk (haha). When I tell a story I just tell the necessary major details. When I get super excited about something and I want to tell someone that is when I leave in every detail. That is where I confuse people too, I tell a story and while I am thinking it in my head I say the major stuff assuming the other person already knows what I am talking about. So leaving in some minor details is not too bad.
I would have to say my communication style is different than anybody else’s. I think everybody is unique in how they portray themselves through words. That is how we distinguish ourselves from others; we use our own kind of language that everyone understands.

All that work for something
I admit I am a poor essay writer. If I write a good essay it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. When it comes to essay writing and dedication, I just can’t seem to find much motivation for it. When I took English 101 I learned A LOT of writing skills from my professor. I am not sure if it was because we wrote about six essays in her class or if she really taught me stuff I didn’t know. I think it could be a mixture of both. I am thankful though for learning so much in her class because I really feel like I left her class with good knowledge on writing. After taking that class, I had the courage to take this class “Critical Approach Read and Write Research”. All I was thinking was “this is the class I have to really focus on in order to keep up a good grade.” This class has been a lot of work but it is not as bad as I thought it would be. I am keeping up with all the work. When it came time to the first essay I did a lot better than I thought. I think that was due to the extra reading and writing assignments we took part in class. Doing group work and discussion boards really help express your ideas and see what other people think. Group work really helps a lot because you see the knowledge your group has about the topic and you see how much the other group knows about their topic. All this helps me to better understand the assignment and what we are talking about in the assignment. Essay writing is one of the ways in which I have seen my writing improve. PDR’s are a huge help in my writing skills because it gives you another view point on how your essay is being read. I really value what my classmates have to say about my papers. Their input is important because it gives you an eye to point out the little things. After this class is over, I HOPE my writing skills and impeccable and over the top! Since that is not very realistic, I just wish my writing is at the level in which it needs to be in order to be successful in future class and college academics.
I think by doing all the extra work in the class helps improve my critical thinking writing and reading skills. By doing essays, blogging, blog responses, group work, discussion boards, and all the extra things we do makes a quantum change in our writing skills.

Editorial Cartoons
Editorial cartoons play an important part in American culture. I remember when I was little my grandma would save the Sunday paper cartoons so I could read them. I think these small editorial cartoons effectively communicate things going on in society. Some of these editorial cartoons put a little humor or seriousness into the issues or topics going on in society. Also, they emphasize little things or dare to go where people don’t want to. They depict topics that are discussed in everyday life and things people dare no talk about or make fun of. Cartoons say what people are really thinking, all thoughts aside. Daryl Cagle is one of the well known professional cartoonists who focus on emphasizing things going on in society. For example, Cagle’s recent cartoons consist of the H1N1 swine flu virus and how people are reacting towards it. Also, there are cartoons on the recent balloon boy, Obama, Halloween, and more. I think these editorial cartoons help people better understand the issues going on. By adding a humorous twist to the topic it can help people better understand the issue and also gives people a look more on the bright side of things. Meaning that, people can take such a serious issue as the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, and see the humorous side of it. It gives people reassurance in that everything can be looked at in a humorous sort of view. One of the funny cartoons Cagle has come up with is about Halloween. It shows four little kids dressed up for Halloween with their little candy buckets and they are standing in front of a house that has a “for sale” sign on it. On the “for sale” sign it says foreclosed. As these kids are standing in front of this house they are all in a circle looking puzzled or upset. The caption under the cartoon is a voice of one of the kids and it says “Going door to door isn’t working. It’s time to reevaluate our business model.” It shows the topic of Halloween (coming up just next week) and the state of the economy. This is a perfect example of how cartoonists depict things we never really would have thought of. Like kids having to skip so many homes because of all the foreclosures in our neighborhoods. It’s funny yet shows the true reality we are facing. There are plenty more editorial cartoons on Daryl Cagle’s website that are very funny. If you want to check it out it is www.cagle.com .
I think cartoons help alleviate the stress or worry we have about current issues or topics going on. They help see the funny side of things. I think they are even funnier because when we read these cartoons we always think in our heads “very true” and let out a little laugh.

Freedom of Speech
I am proud to have the rights given by the First Amendment. (Actually I am proud to have the rights of all the amendments but for the sake of the chapter I am just going to focus on the First Amendment.) Given the right of free speech is one of the biggest freedoms people can have (along with many other rights). Although I have the freedom of speech, there are some things that I would not say. I grew up being taught that you should treat others how you would want to be treated. I would not disrespect others by using sexist, racist, or another abusive language. To me, this kind of talk is unnecessary and disrespectful. So, with that said, the prompt asks if you would sign an agreement that asks you to refrain from using racist, sexist, and otherwise abusive language on campus in order to be accepted to the school. Personally, I think why wouldn’t someone sign an agreement saying they would not use racist, sexist, or abusive language? Is it really that hard to be respectful to other peoples sexuality, race, gender, or just in general, be respectful? For me, this agreement would be easy for me to sign. Although it may be restricting my freedom of speech, I do not talk down to anyone’s sexuality, race, or gender. I do not talk down to anyone period. The prompt asks to weight the social benefits of this agreement. I think this agreement will reduce prejudices and make people accept one another. It is really important that people do not judge each other. Prejudging is what affects our world today. People still live with prejudices and cannot accept others for who they are. Which is sad. But that is life. Not everyone has the same opinion about issues or ideas. People grow up learning things differently. That is something I can understand. But what I do not understand is why people would put others down because of their race, gender, or sexuality. It is disrespectful and unnecessary. So the agreement would be something I would sign because I would have no problem abiding by those rules. Not only would I sign it, I would encourage others to sign it as well. I am totally for freedom of expression just as long as it is in a tasteful way and under necessary conditions.

Self Respect AND Happiness?
Which is more important- happiness or self-respect? I find this question a bit hard to answer. Both answers are extremely important and valuable in a person’s life. They both a equally important and should both be a top value in a person’s life. They are not just separate answers either. They both go hand in hand. If you respect yourself then you will understand you need happiness. If you are happy then you are respecting yourself. Happiness in my life makes everything around me better. If I am happy I enjoy things more, I am motivated to do things, and I am carefree. And that is a big deal because it gives me a sense of freedom. Being happy makes you feel weightless and carefree. Not worrying about much but caring for the things that need attention. Being happy is enjoying what you love and sharing that joy with others around you. I believe when you are happy, you should spread it around
Having self respect is a part of being happy. Everybody in life wants to always be happy. When you are allowing yourself to enjoy life and be happy you are respecting yourself. As Dr. Wayne Dyer says “The best thing to give…to yourself, respect….” And I believe this is true. If you have self respect than happiness is right there beside you. Self Respect means a lot of things. It shows the confidence in yourself and what you believe in. It is staying true and honest with yourself.
In Reading Lolita in Tehran, Nafisi says “My generation had tasted individual freedom and lost it; no matter how painful the loss…..But what did this new generation have to safeguard them…Like Catherine’s, their desires, their yearnings, their urges to express themselves, were manifested in bizarre ways. As she is shunned by her father, manipulated by her aunt and finally deserted by her suitor…to stand up to each and every one of them-not in their way but in her own, quietly and humbly… she maintains her own style of dealing with events and with people.” This statement that is in the book reflects how people respect themselves or make themselves happy. We all approach things in a different way. One person’s way of being happy may be how another person feels happiness is and that goes along with self respect.
All in all, I believe respecting yourself leads to being happy or promoting happiness. We all find what makes us happy and by doing what makes us happy is respecting who we are. I love this quote by E.E. Cummings about self worth. We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.

Non-Verbal Communication
I am definitely a believer in vibrations in the meaning of energy we project to people. But a powerful way of communicating is through non-verbal communication. I would say about 65% of my communication throughout the day is non-verbal. Whether it be nodding my head yes or no, waving hi or bye to a friend, or other things. But I also give facial expression that express how I am feeling. My dress style, I guess you could say, is a reflection of me. When I wear sweats to school it shows I am tired and really did not feel like getting out of bed and going to school. If I am all dress up with my hair done and stuff it means I am ready for the day. (Usually it means I probably should dress up one day for school because otherwise people would probably think I am a bum because I always wear soccer pants or sweatshirts.) Body language also is a good way to communicate. I always give my family and friends a hug which shows love. Sometime when I am in a bad mood it shows in my body language and sometimes my facial expressions. The most important thing I think in non-verbally communicating with someone is the vibes you give and receive. You always have that six sense in whether you can feel a good or bad vibe from someone. My boyfriend was the one who really got me into believing about vibes. He always tells me to have a good vibe when you surround yourself with others. Which basically means if you are in a bad mood, try not to show it. If you happy in a good mood, share the love and happiness. He is a very philosophical person which is why he always has the wisest things to say. But I do believe you should always have good vibrations when you are around other people. Slowly I am learning how to become this person.
Communicating non-verbally is just as powerful as communicating verbally I think. It says so much without saying anything at all. It is very interesting how everyone knows exactly what body language or facial expressions are communicating to us. If you think deeply about it, isn’t it interesting how we all know that a wave means hello or goodbye and a nod up and down means yes and a nod side to side means no. Giving people hugs or kisses is a sign of friendship and love. Having crossed arms means you are mad or angry. It is all so interesting how of time everyone has learned how to communicate with each other without using words. Most of all, it is amazing how the energy you project can be detected by someone around you. Whether it is a good or bad energy you are letting people know how you feel.

Different Cultures in an English Global Economy
In the United States, English is the language that dominates. I could not imagine what it would be like for people who are not native speakers of English. Everything that surrounds us in America is written and said in English. Although this is hard for nonnative speakers, I think they have found a way to adjust easily. Many people who speak Spanish live in America and some do not understand English very well. I think America has helped these people adapt to citizen life. For example, a lot of new things I buy nowadays have directions or labels on them in English or Spanish. Also, yesterday I drove past a bank and there were two signs in the window, one was in Spanish while the other was in English. There are many things that America does to help those who are not native adapt much easier to an English speaking country. But even without the help of America, people have learned how to live in America and in an environment where their native tongue is not the dominant one.
I could not imagine what I would be like to live in a place where everyone around is speaking a different language and where everything you read is not in your native tongue. I think since nonnative people would have difficulty finding jobs. This is because they do not speak the native tongue and they cannot read or understand the language. Having a job provides you with the money you need to buy essential living items. Also, maybe expanding their education to get a better paying job is a challenge. Being able to understand English and learn new things would be difficult if they did not speak the language. There are many important things that people need in order to live like understanding health plans and home owner stuff. Being able to understand that stuff is important. I know that Spanish speaking citizens have found a way to cope with the domination of English speaking people. Ultimately, living in a global economy dominated by English and being a nonnative (no matter what language is spoken) is going to be difficult in many aspects.
People are capable of adapting to any environment they choose to live in. Evolution provides evidence that humans are capable of adapting to certain situations and settings. I think the biggest thing is if the people who are native and speak the language, can they accept those who do not? Can people accept those who do not understand or speak the language that dominates? And I think those questions can be transferred over to today’s society and how we accept people.

The Case for Short Words
Making Connections #3
English has been a class I have always struggled in until last semester. I had a good English teacher that taught me A LOT about writing essays. The reason I struggled with English in the first place was having to write essays. I always felt that a good essay was one that sounded intellectual and had big words. Little did I know until I read “The Case for Short Words” by Richard Lederer. I do not know why I thought using big complex words helped make an essay much better. After reading the essay by Richard Lederer I was immediately convinced.
I never liked reading essays or books that had large, complex, hard to understand words in it. So why would I try to do that in my own essay? Why would I try to confuse and make things a lot harder on the reader of my writings? Now that I understand that “small words can meet your needs with strength, grace, and charm that large words do not have”, I will keep that in mind as I write further essays. As Lederer states, “our tongue is rich in crisp, brisk, swift, short words.” This is exactly true because when people communicate they do not use such big words. When I talk to my friends or family I do not say words like pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism or antidisestablishmentarianism (actually I would never use these words under any circumstance because I am not even sure how to pronounce them) or any words that would be too complex for me to say and for them to understand. I usually speak in one syllable words like, as the book lists, I, you, the, a, to, it, that, of, and, in, what, he, this, have, do , she, not, on, and they. Short words do express what you have to say clearly and efficiently without completely losing interest of the listener or reader. Shakespeare is known for his exceptional writings and he mostly used one syllable words to create his masterpieces.
Riachard Lederer wrote his first four paragraphs in one syllable words. At first I thought that must be extremely hard and frustrating to do but he made it look so easy. His writing made him sound intelligent and credible with only using one syllable words. He even pointed out that most writings out of the bible are written in only one syllable word sentences. After thinking about that, I realized that his outlook was truly brilliant and astounding.
Ultimately, what I learned from Richard Lederer was that using large words are fine but when necessary. Smaller words can do the same job as large words and are more familiar. Being able to put together smaller words correctly will make your statement powerful and will be beneficial to you and the reader. Also, it will help you sound intelligent without having to use big words. Just by using small, old words where you can, can help make a paper great and understandable to the reader.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Has a Dream and Sojourner Truth is a Woman
In Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was comparatively similar to that of Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech. They both use repetition to captivate their audience. Can you tell what phrases they repeated in their speech? Hint: look at the title of their speech. Both speeches emphasize on their main point. Martin Luther King had a dream or a vision and Sojourner believed she was a woman who deserved to be treated like any other human being. They both use repetition as a linguistic device to thoroughly and affectively communicate their ideas that will ultimately push them towards change.
I think they both would support each other’s subject matter of their speeches. Both speeches are on the same topic, fighting for equal rights. Martin Luther King, Jr. is fighting for equality among race and wishes discrimination against race be overcome. Sojourner Truth is fighting for women’s rights. I think they both would support each other because the women's rights movement grew in large part out of the anti-slavery movement. In the end they are both fighting for equal rights whether the situation be women’s rights or the end of racial discrimination.
I think they would both respond to each other’s oratory style differently. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech has a different tone than Sojourners “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech. Martin Luther King’s message cannot be expressed in the way Sojourners was. His speech was more calm and motivating through his choice of words. He had good grammar and spoke in a very confident yet humble tone. Sojourner’s speech was more direct and frank. She had horrible grammar and by the way she used her words you can tell it was more of an attack to men. She expressed her thoughts in a more harsh yet truthful way that was not very professional. Martin Luther King expressed his speech much differently and if he used the same tone as Sojourner did then his message would have come across much more differently. I think his speech would have caused much disturbance among the people. They way they both presented their speeches though were thoroughly effective. Sojourner stood up for women’s rights and was insensitive while giving her speech which made it much more affective. She was standing up for all women. On the other hand, Martin Luther King, Jr. was standing up for the black community who was already bitter about not having equal rights. African Americans looked up to Martin Luther King as a guide to help push for positive change. They did what he did, they were calm and patient. If Martin Luther expressed his speech like Sojourner did, then I think the black community would have reacted in a much more aggressive and forceful way. When delivering a message to your community or your audience, how you express what you are saying and your tone of voice really reflects how your audience is going to react. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Sojourner Truth’s speeches truly reflect that.

Silence or Indifference
Martin Luther King Jr. and Elie Weisel both had a common goal, to make people aware that “whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly”(p.529). They both address that it is convenient for people to look the other way when someone else is a victim because it is just easier that way. People have the choice to do what they want and are always taking the easy way around things because it is “troublesome to be involved in another person’s pain and despair.” They both are speaking on behalf of those who are victims of being left alone with no one to take the time to lend them a hand. They both are showing that no matter what year it is, making a difference in life will ultimately push for positive change.
In Martin Luther King’s letter he is expressing the despair of the African American rights. He puts across the message that not all people were treated equally. How can the white just push aside the black? As the colored are fighting for equal rights, the white community is stalling in their claims to help ease discrimination. In the letter, MLK states how they negotiated with Birmingham’s community to take down store signs humiliating their race. As weeks and months went by signs were either put back up or were never taken down. He is fighting for equality and peace between everyone in any race. He is promoting the idea that everyone should take care of one another. He is pushing for change and wants all communities, no matter the color, to take action to make a difference.
Elia Weisel had the same goal as Martin Luther King jr. and that was to help push people for change. He wanted people to know the unconstructive effects of not making a difference. He stresses that being indifferent will not help reach for positive change. He is making the point that the majority of the population is indifferent and the minorities are the ones who are suffering from it. Like Martin Luther King Jr said “whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” And as Weisel states “to be indifferent to that suffering is what makes the human being inhuman” which ultimately reflects the arguments of both men. They both want those who are of big influence to the people to step out and not be indifferent.
Being silent basically means to me that you are not voicing you opinion. Silence is not expressing what you feel or think about things. Not standing up for what it is that you believe in. But being silent doesn’t exactly mean you do not help those in need. Being indifferent on the other hand is. Being indifferent is being silent through your actions and not caring about what you can do for others. It is when you don’t care so ultimately you never do anything about it. Being silent and being indifferent are similar but they both can hinder the push for change and making a big difference in the world.

What if I was illiterate?
I could not imagine being illiterate. Imagine living without the ability to read books or write down simple things like your address or phone number. Reading is a crucial part of learning. If I was unable to read I would not be as knowledgeable. Most of my learning comes from reading. Imagine not being able to read street signs while driving. You would be able to know the word stop, which is very dangerous, and being able to get a job would be impossible. Having a job is what gets you the things you need in life. The biggest parts of life involve you to read and write. For example, people say high school years are the best years of your life (high debatable). You have prom, which requires you to read requirements for the prom dress code, read when the prom is, what time, where it is at, requirements in order to go, etc. Another high school function that is a huge part of life is graduation, you need the proper credits in order to graduate, in which, it requires you to get good grades in your class, and that requires you to be able to read and write. Throughout your entire educational career, there is always something that requires you to read or write. Although there may be a way around it or getting used to and understanding some words is possible, there will always be one aspect of your life that is missing and is not completely fulfilled.
Basically, you would not get the concept of most of the important things in life. Reading directions to take you places, assemble something, or to complete a task. All in which, when you are done, gives you a sense of accomplishment. Registering to vote and voting requires you to be able to read and write. In everyone’s daily life they are required to read or write something. Our world is based off this and being illiterate hinders the ability to be fully successful not matter the aspect of life. Two things that would greatly affect me if I was illiterate is my education and not being able to complete my goal to become a dietician. Also, I would like to be successful in my career and being illiterate would greatly affect that part as well. Knowing how important literacy is would completely frustrate me if I was illiterate. Maybe though if I was illiterate, and did not know what it was like to read and write, I would find my own way to communicate and interpret things.
It is all one big chain affect where one thing is connected to another. Being illiterate affects all aspects of life. All in all, being able to read and write is crucial in advancing in life, whether it be your education, career, and life in general.

The Power of Language
I totally believe language is a great tool in expressing yourself. They way every individual expresses themselves is a reflection of their true self. There are many times where I have had moments realizing the true power of language. Not only have I recognized it through my own actions, but the people around me. Language is very powerful and in most of the cases in which I have noticed that is when people try expressing themselves verbally and through body language. Body language is also a powerful form of language and I have realized that when I get upset, irritated, or mad at someone or something.
The power of language is not just speaking it verbally. Expressing yourself is not just verbal but it is also your body language. We can say so much to one person without even opening up our mouths to speak. The way you display your body language can show a person what you are feeling, thinking, and much more. For example, I have picked up some of my mom’s qualities like when she gets mad she does not talk about it with the person, she uses her body language to show that person she is upset. So, when I get mad at someone I do not talk to them about the situation, I usually leave it as is but show the person I am upset using my body language. I will either be unusually quiet, be a little rougher with things (ie. Slam down papers, shut doors hard, etc.), and usually I give facial expressions. You can tell I am upset or mad just by the way I am presenting myself.
I have realized that language is powerful when you are dealing with your problems and trying to express yourself. When you are in a relationship of any kind I think that is when language is most powerful tool in order for it to be a good relationship. The relationships you have with people are based upon how you act towards them, for example, if you are loyal, trustworthy, fun, etc. Being able to effectively communicate with your family, friends, companions, coworkers, and others is important. Another example of where I realized communication and language is powerful is while playing soccer. I am a captain of the college soccer team and my job is to effectively communicate to the girls what the coach needs from them. I have to do this in a way that is not mean and harsh but authoritative and understanding. I need to find the balance when communicating to my team that I come across as their friend, but I do need them to listen to me. I do not need to just apply that balance to my role and captain, but also in my social life as well. I need to balance my emotions when talking to certain people and my tone when talking about certain things. All in all, language is the most powerful tool in your relationships and being aware of what you say and how you present your body language is important.

My First Blog! (Exploring Critically Thinking in My Own Words)
I believe that every person, in some point of their day, is faced to think critically about something. Thinking critically could involve many things like making an important decision and what you feel about certain things. In order to critically think about something I feel you need to observe or experience the situation and apply your knowledge to best identify what it is you observed or experienced. I think analyzing things is an important part in thinking critically about anything.
My habits are reflected when it comes to reading and thinking critically about something. Hopefully this class will help me think critically and better analyze concepts of writings and writing itself.
I analyze things all the time. When I mean analyze I mean like I will be in class and looking around the room and notice a tear in the wall paper or something. Little things like that are what I always analyze but I do analyze important stuff too :). One important thing I analyze is the media. We are constantly surrounded by the media. I think many people analyze the media, and if they don’t, they probably already understand the negative effects (as it is overly obvious) it has on people in the world. The media has distorted many ideas about how life should be. One big example is the notion of being thin. Being thin has been set into the mind of the people through the media which has led to girls being overly self conscious about their bodies. Women constantly dieting and developing eating disorders just to fit this misconceived notion. I believe it is important to also analyze your academic work. It is a crucial part (I think) in the learning process. Being able to understand and interpret your assignments helps complete them correctly and to the best of your ability. Another important aspect of life that should be analyzed is your professional endeavors. In order to be successful I believe knowing a lot about your career and where you want it to take you in life is crucial.
Hopefully this class can put me in the right path of how to think critically and analyze in many situations whether it is in my life or academically. Just being able to think critically about situations and applying those skills to my writings and personal life would be an achievement coming out of the class. In the process of all this I am not sure how my views will be about the world, hopefully they change to better understand it, but once I find out I will blog about it!
