I think critically thinking is much much more than what I wrote in my first blog. Thinking critically is being able to see beneath the surface of what you are analyzing. It is being able to understand, using your current knowledge and applying it, to what is being analyzed. Analyzing things is a crucial part in being able to critically think about something.
In my first blog “I wrote that my habits are reflected when it comes to reading and thinking critically about something. When it comes to my life, I feel when I think critically about things it is easier than when I read books or other sorts of writings. When analyzing books or other writings I usually end up doubting myself saying “That’s probably wrong”. I am never confident in whether or not I truly get the concept or the underlying ideas of a book or any kind of writing. Hopefully this class will help me think critically and better analyze concepts of writings and writing itself.” My opinion has changed in some ways. When I critically think about my work in school it helps me better understand the concepts. I can critically think more effectively due to the classes I have taken this semester, giving most of the credit to this class and my art class. Also, now when I read books and writings I can analyze them with confidence and trust my critical thinking skills to better understand them. This class has helped me a lot in sharpening up my critical thinking skills.
In my first blog, I wrote that analyzing things includes observing things. My thoughts on this have changed. When I analyze things, mostly my school work, I think of how I can approach it. I think of all the necessary outcomes and all of its details and keep that in mind while trying to approach it. Analyzing something does not just involve looking at it but applying knowledge to it, exploring it much more than just its surface.
I previously wrote that I analyze the media and how they display the view of what people should look like. I think this is still true in that the media represents women as being thin. This is true, yet, it doesn’t take much to figure that out. All in all, we all analyze and critically think every day. Thanks to this class I can do that more efficiently.

Ashlin, I enjoyed reading your response. I am glad that you mentioned that critical thinking is being able to apply what you have analyzed, and that it is much more than just observing it. You are right. If we just analyze and analyze away, and do nothing with it, then what was the ultimate purpose? We have to go deeper, and challenge our selves. Like you, this class also gave me confidence in thinking critically when I read. Before I would also doubt myself, but now I have more confidence because of the skills I have learned in this class. Now I can take these skills and apply them to my other classes and even to life in general.
ReplyDeleteHello Ashlin, great post once again. It seems as though you have, by your own admission, improved your critical thinking skills all around! This is great, like you said, critical thinking is probably the single most valuable skill you can take from any college course. It is both applicable in every day life and in the work place. Both places require you to go beneath the surface and find the underlying message. After reading what you had previously posted and the post from the end of the term, it seems like you have met your goals you had set for this class! That's great! It must have taken a lot of hard work to attain that status, but I'm sure it was totally worth it! I pose the same question to you as I did the previous blog I responded to. What about goals pertaining to your personal writing skill. Was that a goal of yours? Maybe improve you skill in organizing your thoughts? Maybe improve your MLA formatting skill? Anyway, I'm very happy that you absorbed all you could from this class and I hope you take it with you to the next level of your education!
ReplyDeleteAshlin, I enjoyed reading your response this week. I also believe critically thinking is much more than I thought it was. I agree with what you said that "Thinking critically is being able to see beneath the surface of what you are analyzing. It is being able to understand, using your current knowledge and applying it, to what is being analyzed. Analyzing things is a crucial part in being able to critically think about something." I use to just react without thinking about what was happening, sometimes it got me into more trouble than I liked. But now I sit back and think about what is happening around me and analyze much more than I ever use to. For example when reading text in a book or article I use to anazlyze the story after I read the entire text, sometimes I would forget what I'd read and it would require me to go back and reread what I read. Now when I read I pay more attention and when I don't immediately understand something I critically think as to what is being said so I better understand the overall text. But I'm glad you've seemed to grow when it comes to critically thinking, I think we all have after this class! Great post!
